These are managed applications written using the WMC API and packaged as CLI assemblies. Presentation Layer applications can have full access to both the .NET Framework as well as the Windows Media Center API, with the latter exposing a managed object model to access and manipulate the current states of the media management and playback, live television, video recording as well as the presentation capabilities of Windows Media Center. Presentation Layer applications are rendered using the bitmap-based Windows Media Center Presentation Layer, the user-input and presentation system of WMC. Presentation Layer includes support for animations, dynamic layout, keyboard/mouse as well as remote navigation. Presentation Layer applications can be streamed over RDP to Windows Media Center Extenders; so Presentation Layer applications run on the extenders without any modification. Presentation Layer, however, exists only in the Windows Vista version of WMC.[37][38]

With a Windows Vista PC with Windows Media Center, users have a complete home entertainment center for accessing TV, music, photos, movies, and other digital content. While the Windows Media Center PC is the source of all this rich content, the Windows Media Center experience is not limited to a single TV connected to the PC. Using an Extender device, the user can enjoy Windows Media Center from any TV in the home by accessing the Windows Media Center user interface remotely. An Extender for Windows Media Center is a hardware device that enables the user to access Windows Media Center content and applications from a TV located elsewhere in the user's home with a remote control. The Extender uses the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) over a wired or wireless connection to communicate with a Windows Media Center PC, and a side-channel to transport audio and video content to the remote device. While the content is stored on the Windows Media Center PC, the Extender hosts a session of the Windows Media Center user interface to access that content and display it on a TV. The Extender session is an independent session that can run at the same time as the user session on the PC. A single PC can support up to five Extender sessions at a time.

For such a small design, HyperDeck Shuttle has powerful connections. The HDMI input can be connected to cameras and switchers such as ATEM Mini, and the HDMI output can be connected to monitors for presentations or ATEM Mini switchers as a long form media player. Imagine playing commercials, promos or music videos into ATEM Mini switchers from HyperDeck Shuttle! The rear panel also includes a 12V DC power input and a power supply is included. The 1G Ethernet connection allows control and remote file uploads. The USB-C expansion port can be used to record to large external disks, for software updates or as a webcam output. The SD card slot supports both SD cards and UHS-II cards.

For many people, this will be by far the most convenient option for Kodi remote control. It keeps control of your media center with the same device you use for your TV. It's essentially a unified remote solution for Kodi and every other TV service.

Media centers are the perfect place to store collections of images, music, and videos that people create on their computers, smartphones, or other devices. Their primary function is to store this media, such as your latest vacation photos or your favorite film. However, you may find your patience being tested if you start searching for a particular file, only to realize that nothing is organized properly.

The primary function of a media center is to organize all media files (audio, video, and image) on the selected computer system in a clearly arranged format. The user interface should make it easy for you to find and play back the content you want.

The Bulgarian startup Stremio launched an exciting alternative to Plex in 2015 with their application of the same name, which was quickly met with enthusiasm from film and TV fans. The open source media center, which is easy to use, focuses entirely on organizing video content, and integrates video-on-demand services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc. in an interesting way: add-ons allow content from different providers to be combined with the Stremio interface. Video clips, shows and movies on your own device are also taken into account when creating the library. Thanks to the integrated calendar function, you can also always keep track of new episode releases or highly anticipated films.

OSMC is an open-source and free media center that is designed to offer you an exceptional entertainment quotient. Here, you can enjoy music, pictures, movies, videos, and TV shows, showcasing details like the year, actors, genres, singers, directors, and so on.

OSMC has its own App Store that allows you to customize your video streaming experience based on your preference, all remotely. It can play most media formats like MP4 from different streaming protocols and across devices.

Kodi features a 10-foot interface that you can use with remote controls and televisions. It lets you view and play most of the videos, podcasts, music, and other media files easily from the internet along with local storage media.

You can store pictures, home videos and create a slideshow for easy view. You can use a remote to control the playing media while sitting on your couch for more convenience. You can use MediaPortal on your mobile or web and can check the news, weather, and much more.

It helps you extract metadata of the media files, including local metadata, embedded tags, online metadata, Swisscenter, XBMC, and MyMovies. In addition to that, Serviio even supports video thumbnails, DVD posters, CD covers, etc. Its technology helps you minimize your task by adding files in series and mark episodes of a last viewed series.

While not specifically tailored for it, SlideDog is used by more than a hundred Pastors and Church AV technicians for handling sermons and church services in the USA today. It offers great PowerPoint and media files compatibility, has an iOS/Android and web based remote, includes audience interaction features and is apparently a good enough church presentation software alternative for many people. SlideDog does not come with Bible or SongSelect integration, so content creators would have to add that to PowerPoint slides, videos or images themselves.

One step up from using the USB port on your TV is to use a portable digital media player such as the Micca Speck 1080p Full-HD Ultra Portable Digital Media Player. It is a useful media player that can play multiple images and video formats in full 1080p HD. The player comes with a remote control and connects to your TV via HDMI cable. This device includes some noteworthy features such as an SD/SDHC memory card reader, USB port, automatic restart after a power failure, aluminum case exterior and high bit-rate playback. Just like the first USB thumb drive option, you will need to remove your drive from this device, plug it into your computer and manage your media locally.
