Sometimes people want to create fictional languages, maybe for a book that they're writing, a way to send hidden messages, or even just for fun. Making an effective alphabet can be hard though. This article will push you in the right direction.

This allowed the Cherokee to create written documents: religious periodicals, newspapers, laws, and in 1827, a Constitution for the Cherokee Nation. The 1827 printing and a later 1875 edition of the Constitution and Laws of the Cherokee Nation are among the treasures of the Law Library Rare Book Collection at the Library of Congress. (For the 1875 printing, see the title page at right, and also explore a fully digitized version.)

From the Klingon language in the Star Trek universe to the Na'vi language from James Cameron's Avatar, fictional languages can go a long way towards making a work of fiction feel real. Making a fictional language can be an intense undertaking because the process is complex and requires a lot of thought. However, with some practice and commitment, anyone can create their own language for fun or as part of a fictional world.

Teachers can use the downloadable materials form this website to create letter books in which each page contains one letter. The kids draw or cut pictures from magazines that start with the particular letter and glue them into their "book." See example >

Allow me to go back in time for just a minute. Before I was a teacher, I worked in Kindergarten as an assistant for one year, and this Kinder class used a curriculum called Dekodiphukan (decode if you can), which was written by the same author who created Math Their Way. Before children were ever taught a single letter, they were taught sounds and blending. It was done through pictures instead of letters, and each picture had an action to go with it. The only one I can remember is the sound /ks/ represented by a picture of a boy breaking a stick. The only problem I could see with this program was that the children spent a large portion of the Kindergarten year learning to read pictographs instead of words. However, they did learn to blend sounds.

A few years after that, when I was teaching Pre-K, the school used Open Court Phonics. We did not have a commercially-bought curriculum in Pre-K (happily!), but we did have a set of the Open Court letter cards. The cards had the letters with a picture and little rhyme about each picture. There was also an action for each letter sound. I thought, this is perfect! This combines the idea from Dekodiphukan of teaching letter sounds with actions, but with the actual letter, not just a pictograph. A combination of letter-sound-picture-action to learn the alphabet. I have since seen several programs and alphabet card sets that teach this way. The beauty of this method is that you combine visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning by using an alphabet with pictures and actions.

A photo book is an album-like book with printed images, text, and designs. The images can include anything from family photos, vacation pictures, portfolio art, and more. The difference between a photo book and photo album is that the photo book has images pre-printed onto the paper. Photo albums are usually composed of thick pieces of paper with plastic sheets where you can place photographs. Because of the thicker pages, there are typically fewer images in a photo album than a photo book.

We are honestly completely fascinated by the manual alphabets from around the world. They vary greatly. The alphabet used in Australia, Britain, and New Zealand is the same and uses two hands instead of one. We highly recommend learning this alphabet simply for the fun factor.

1. Talk about the pictures. My Two was very excited when he saw the cards and wanted to look at the pictures with me. He sat by the window with a small stack and named each picture, with my help. While your child may not want to use them this way, you can talk about the pictures as you sit together.

Thank you so much for these! They are fantastic!Would it be possible to get a page with blank boxes so I can create a couple Canadian picture cards for my littles (like our Canadian flag, a map of Canada, and our Canadian quarter)?

I just saw these on Pinterest, I have only been teaching three year olds for about six months and need teaching materials with pictures. I am excited that I saw these and all your other items. Thank you for all your hard work and all you suggestions on how to use them.

Kids will complete this abc cut and paste activity by colouring the pictures and cutting them out (strengthening fine motor skills); then they will paste the pictures in their alphabet book on the page with the correct beginning sound.

If you're a designer or illustrator who's comfortable creating glyphs in Adobe Illustrator, this tutorial is right up your alley! You'll learn how to create your own font in Illustrator by planning out a letter set, go over ways to refine the font design, and prepare files for use in a font-making program, all from the comfort of Adobe Illustrator.

In this tutorial, you'll learn how to make a font. This will teach you how to make your own font in Illustrator and create simple and fun fonts that can be sold as digital assets on Envato Market. You won't need a font creator plugin for Illustrator here. Just check out the market's font category for inspiration for your personal designs.

An option to keep your drawn letters from being a mess is to use grid lines in a drawing program like Adobe Photoshop. You can create a Grid Layout if you wish, or place grid lines manually. This allows you to keep track of the height and width of each letterform in an informal setting.

Now we'll continue learning how to create your own font in Illustrator. In your New Document, import or Paste (Control-V) your letterform group. Ungroup them so you have complete control over each object. I added Grid lines over my Artboard to help define the limits of each part in my letterform set. The lines will define the highest and lowest points of uppercase and lowercase letters.

If you opt for the Blob Brush Tool, you'll create font Illustrator objects as each letterform. If you opt for the Brush Tool, you'll be creating paths that you can change with various brushes. I'll be using a custom brush, created next, and the Brush Tool.

If you're going to export the content to another program, you'll need to save each and every glyph as its own SVG file. I've kept the default settings for saving SVG files and have simply made sure that there are 89 files organized by character name in a folder once I'm done. This is how you create a font in Illustrator.

Now that you know how to design your own font in Illustrator and you've created all 89, or so, of your typeface characters, you're ready to jump on over to part two of this tutorial: font creation, where you'll learn the next steps of moving from vector to font! We'll explore options for in-app font creation using font creator plugin for Illustrator with a purchased script, exporting the character set into apps like Font Forge, and more! Share your font character creation below, and join me in the second part of this tutorial.

I wanted to thank-you for posting this! I am an art educator in Silicon Valley and my speciality is teaching about art of the Holocaust. Your lesson made me think of an incredible educator named Friedl Dicker-Brandeis. She taught art to children at Theresensteidt (Terezin) Concentration Camp. She would have the students create illustrated alphabets to remind them of their names. Since they were identified by their numbers they were losing their identity and Friedl tried to find a way to personalize their names and initials. Just thought I would share that if anyone wanted to make another art connection. What a wonderful assignment. Your students create beautiful work!

Drawing and writing literacy activitiesScribbling and drawing help young children develop fine motor skills for writing with pencils and pens later in childhood. It also helps children to understand that writing and pictures have meanings and you use them to communicate information. 2ff7e9595c
